There are basically 2 ways to connect a security system, hardwired and wireless. Hardwired system requires wiring to connected between the components. Modern wireless security systems have no cumbersome wiring.

Hardwired
Many hardwired home security systems are installed when a home is built or renovated. This makes it easier and less expensive to do the installation. The downside of hardwired system is that it can be unsightly with the wires running around and it normally requires professional installation. One advantage it has over wireless connection is that it’s not prone to interference.

Wireless
Because it does not need wires, it also means that the wires can’t be pulled out accidentally or have nails hammered through them which can set the alarm off or disable the system. Wireless systems are more mobile and can be positioned more flexibly within a room or anywhere on a property. This makes DIY systems easier. Wireless systems now account for more than 50% of security systems purchased.

Hybrid
Hybrid security systems offer the best capabilities of hardwired and wireless security systems. Hybrid systems will have a central console or control panel that uses hardwired sensors as well as wireless sensors. Wired and wireless systems used together may offer extra level of security so that if something should happen to your hardwired circuits, you still have the wireless network protecting your property.

Sensors are used to check for disturbance such as movement and heat change in an otherwise “quiet” environment. When there is a change in the environment, the sensor is triggered causing it to send a signal to the control panel.

Sensors are essentially magnetic switches that trigger the alarm whenever a door or window is opened. One part of the switch is installed on the door or window frame; the mating part attaches to the door or the window sashes. When the unit is opened, separating the parts, the interruption in current triggers the alarm.

There is a wide variety of home security system manufacturer providing different types of security components. With advancement in technology, new components are increasingly being incorporated into security system by manufacturers to gain edge over the competitors. New technology such as wireless sensors has recently become very popular as it provides ease of installation and with no unsightly cables running around. The method of signaling warning has also evolved from the conventional method to provide new ways of scaring off the burglars rather than just blasting out loud siren.

Because of the wide variety of alarms available, it is important for buyers, especially beginners to understand the different types of security system and components available before getting one. At its simplest form, how an alarm system works still remain the same.

A driveway alarm helps to protect your car and outdoor driveway area from would be thieves. Other than protecting your car, it also helps to prevent the driveway from being used as an access point to your home. One of the most used access point to your house by thieves is the driveway and it serve much sense to protect this area well.

The idea is to make this area very difficult to gain access to. When a criminal cannot reach the targeted object, there is simply no way for the item to be stolen. Similarly, if an object that is disturbed as it may be during an attempted break in, makes some sort of alert to let you know what is going on, this make theft less likely. With a driveway alarm you can be extra sure that no one is going to get in to your garage or driveway, not to mention home, without you noticing it.

Take the time to do some research on the different models of driveway alarms in order to determine the pros and cons of the various types and services. Every home and driveway have unique set ups and designs. If you don’t take the time to consider which alarm system will best meet your needs, you may wind up having to replace the system shortly after you buy it. It’s much better to take the time and effort to research and discover which alarms have worked the best for others.

Factors to consider when choosing a driveway alarm:

* The maximum transmission distance of the transmitter. Big driveway will need transmitter with longer transmission distance as most likely the receiver is located far away.

* The type of driveway alarm
- A hose that a car or other heavy vehicle may run over
- A magnetic probe that may be hidden and will only detect metallic vehicles
- A wireless beam that will detect cars as well as people and animals

* Are there any trees between the location of the transmitter and receiver ? If so are the trees a dense forest or sparse or somewhere in between? The denser the forest the less the transmission distance.

* The construction of your home – Is it a mobile home, does it have aluminum or steel siding, is it constructed of stucco, does it have paper backed insulation or foil insulation?

* Are there transformers nearby – pad mounted or pole mounted may interfere with the transmission/reception of the signal

When searching the internet, it helps to include phrases like “customer reviews” in your search terms. This will help you narrow down shopping sites that feature customer reviews and ratings about driveway alarms.
